Procedure for Pulping

1. Chemical Pulping. The predominant technique is kraft pulping, which is sometimes called sulphate pulping.

2. Chipping. The logs are sliced into little pieces after being debarked.

3. Cooking. In a digester, wood chips are cooked in sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium sulphide (Na2S) at 170°C and pressure. The lignin that connects the cellulose fibres is hydrolyzed during this process.

4. Washing. The pulp is rinsed to get rid of any lingering chemicals and lignin.

5. Screening. Screening the pulp removes impurities and particles that are too large.

6. Bleaching (Optional). To make white kraft paper, the pulp is bleached with either ozone (TCF) or chlorine dioxide (ECF).
