Clarence Birdseye discovered the use of sugarcane bagasse as a paper pulp substitute in the 1930s. Further development of this method occurred in a laboratory at Hacienda Paramonga, a sugar mill in Peru. 

Bagasse is a paper pulp substitute in tropical and subtropical regions with high sugarcane production, such as Argentina, China, Colombia, India, Iran, and Thailand. While it is usable as fuel for sugar mill production, its high moisture content makes it particularly suitable for sugarcane paper production.
